Police Alert Citizens to Bogus IRS Scam

The Sevierville Police Department (SPD) is issuing an alert to citizens regarding a reported (locally and nationally) bogus Internal Revenue Service (IRS) telephone scam. The SPD has received numerous complaints wherein a person or persons representing themselves as IRS agents call the citizen and demand payment of IRS fines via Green Dot cards.

Some citizens have also reported that the person threatens to have the citizen arrested if they fail to immediately comply. As reported, these incidents are not legitimate IRS events and citizens should not comply with this or similar demands for payment to the IRS via Green Dot cards or any other payment method. Citizens are reminded to never provide sensitive personal or financial information over the phone, by email or the internet, or to comply with demands for payment, until they have confirmed the authenticity of the request.
